Spanish Smoothbore Percussion Musket

Spanish smoothbore percussion musket. 36.25” round/octagon barrel. Gauge unknown. The musket features a walnut stock with checkering at both the forerstock and grip. The buttstock is carved in a simple but visual combing pattern. The barrel features ornate designs where it transfers from round to octagon. The barrel is stamped with multiple hallmarks including a cross, a crown above the letters BVS, TIN, DVI, three fleur de-lis symbols and another hallmark – possibly a lion. All of which are decorated in gold. The lock, hammer and trigger guard are made from steel and featuring engraving. The lock is engraved with floral patterns as is the trigger guard. The hammer and left side lock plate are engraved with dragon motifs. The trigger guard is also engraved with the year 1858. The steel butt plate is plain but was cut to match the wavy design of the stock. The barrel is held to the stock with two steel barrel bands. Two sling swivels are attached, one at the forestock, the other near the butt. The ramrod features a steel fore end and appears original to the piece. The musket is in good condition overall except for the barrel. Visually it is very good with little cosmetic damage. The muskets firing mechanism appears to be mechanically functioning. The bore has not been inspected for pitting or wear. Unfortunately, at some point in its history the barrel was bent about 1/4th of the way down. Based on the year engraved on the trigger guard, it is believed to have been manufactured around 1858
