Curta Mechanical Calculator

Curta Mechanical Calculator

Curta Type I high-precision mechanical calculator. Curta calculators were produced between 1948-1972 by Curt Hertzstark. Curtas were the first fully mechanical pocket calculators, operating using a system of gears, pins, and a drum. Calculations can be made by cranking the handle in the corresponding direction and adjusting the number toggles conveniently located on the sides of the cylinder to add, subtract, and much more. Its ingenious design prevents significant wear on its parts, meaning many Curta calculators are still functioning and usable today. It is still well-loved by collectors for many reasons; it’s relatively simple to operate, it easily allows you to track your steps and find any errors made in your equation, and its fully mechanical operating system means no batteries to charge or replace. This example is in great condition and comes with the original aluminum case and instruction booklet. Curt Hertzstark grew up in Austria. His father created calculating machines during the early 20th century before aiding in creating war materials during WWI. After this was when Hertzstark began developing the Curta. But shortly before he was ready to begin production, he was captured by the Germans and placed in the Buchenwald concentration camp during WWII. Hertzstark was forcibly assigned to oversee precision parts manufacturing for the Nazi war efforts. During this time, his idea for the pocket calculator was discovered. Hertzstark was allowed to create plans to present to the Fuhrer, granting him safety from the daily risk of life in Nazi concentration camps. Just before his plans were complete, the prisoners in Buchenwald were released on April 11, 1945. Hertzstark was able to begin production on his calculator shortly after his release. He struck a deal with the prince of Liechtenstein, and in 1948 the first Curta calculators were released to the public. They were immensely popular during their over twenty years of production, until they were eventually overrun by the release of electronic calculators. Hertzstark passed peacefully in 1988 at the age of 84.
